Unless you were under a rock for the past 5 years (and a pretty HUGE rock at that!), you would know that we are in a recession right now. With jobs crumbling, lower productions and reduced economic activity, many people are finding it harder to invest in expensive products, even when they are necessary. Digital cameras are no exception to the rule. However, purchasing a cheap digital camera has both Pros and Cons alike. Below, is a list of both the good sides and bad sides (pros and cons) of purchasing a digital camera that is much cheaper than the high-definition and updated ones.
Here are the PROS!
1. The first Pro of purchasing a cheap digital camera is a no-brainer. IT SAVES YOU MONEY! After all, why else would you purchase a product that is much cheaper than the average if you believe it to have around the same qualities as the average? A digital camera with a price tag under $120 is considered a “cheap” digital camera.
2. They have a very user-friendly design, even for the less experienced among us. Many digital cameras with a price ranged under $120 are what’s called “Point-and-Shoots” or “Compact” cameras. Many of these cameras are designed primarily for simple operation with autofocus capabilities, simplistic physical features, and a compact and lightweight design. The simplicity of these cameras make them popular with people who don’t consider themselves photographers but want an easy to use camera for vacations, parties, reunions and other events. Their compact design allow for easy transport and storage.
3. There is less financial risk involved with cheaper cameras. By risk, I mean the potential of the consumer who bought the digital camera to break, damage, lose or have the camera stolen from them. A cheaper camera = less financial risk in that if by some unfortunate event any one of these things happen, you would’ve lost less of your financial investment compared to a more expensive digital camera.
4. Disposable digital cameras can easily be recycled and reused in full capacity. These single-use cameras allow for you to take as many as 27 pictures with ease. After you’ve finished using it, all you do is take the entire camera back to the place where you purchased it to get the film developed and they will take care of the rest!
There are many obvious reasons why choosing to purchase a cheap digital camera as opposed to an expensive one is a great idea. But with every advantage comes a disadvantage.
Now, about the CONS!
1. The image quality isn’t as good. Naturally, the cheaper a product, the less reliable it may be. Many times a below-average price may very well mean below average quality. When it comes to digital cameras, the physical quality and image quality is VERY important. It is imperative you do your research. Compare the features and reviews of the cheap digital camera with an expensive one and look for the closest resemblance between the two in order to determine the best selection.
2. Secondly, with a cheap digital camera, the functions on the camera may be limited. Manual focus, interchangeable lenses, superior image resolution, bigger depth of field and an assortment of accessories are just some of the advanced features and functions that come with a higher-end digital camera as opposed to a much less expensive one. Depending on your intended use of the camera and your level of photography, a more sophisticated camera may not be a bad idea.
3. The speed of taking pictures is sacrificed with a cheaper model digital camera. Most inexpensive digital cameras take time after start up before it is ready to take pictures. They also require some recovery time between shots, which can be inconvenient if you need to shoot a number of frames rapidly. Again, depending on your intended use with the digital camera, you may want to choose a more high-tech digital camera that can allow for multiple, fast-taking picture shots. It can be a very useful feature in relevant situations.
These are just some of the Pros and Cons of inexpensive/cheap digital cameras. Hopefully, this article can be a guide if and when you need to purchase a digital camera that is right for you.
